Mrs. Doi has the ability to instantly jump from her normal bubbly personality into a “look.” Lacking the vernacular to describe what I see and feel through the lens, the best comparison I can provide is this: The eyes of one who’s ready for sleep versus one who’s ready for war.
In my short time behind-the lens, I’ve noticed this ability with another model, however for Mrs. Doi to exude this intensity as an un-compensated model was a very welcoming surprise.

I’ve found it extremely rare to have a model who can jump into a photo session and immediately get into a groove. It usually takes a while, sometimes the entire session, until they look and feel comfortable in front of the lens. In the past I’ve tried to force the model’s attitude, emotion, look and expression early on, however it looked forced, unnatural and uncomfortable.
Having learned my lesson, rather than forcing an un-natural expression I’ve decided to play off their immediate emotions; build their confidence in front of the lens and slowly move towards the primary shot-lists. This technique seemed to work well in my most recent session with the newly-wed Mr. & Mr. James Doi (granted one of the two had previous experience).

My hard-drive went down a few weeks ago and I’ve been working to get everything back up and running and with the help of a friend I’ve been able to band-aid my computer setup to get me through the next few weeks.
Being back a few weeks we’ve got some catching up to do … so let’s begin.
